Baghdad drone strike| U.S. strike kills militia leader blamed for Iraq attacks | Know more| Oneindia
The U.S. military has carried out a strike in Baghdad against an Iraqi militia leader it blames for attacks against U.S. forces in the country, killing him and another person, a U.S. official told Reuters on Thursday.
The U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the strike hit a vehicle in Baghdad.
It targeted a leader of Harakat al Nujaba, the official said, without naming the person.
The U.S. military has come under attack at least 100 times in Iraq and Syria since the Israel-Hamas war began in October, usually with a mix of rockets and one-way attack drones.
The United States has 2,500 troops deployed in Iraq and 900 in neighbouring Syria in a bid to prevent a resurgence of Islamic State militants.
In a recent warning, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that the threat posed by armed groups like Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (H.T.S.) in Syria is not confined to the country, but will soon spread to neighboring regions, including Iraq, Jordan, and Turkey. Araghchi's comments were made during a joint press conference with Iraqi and Syrian officials in Baghdad, as he emphasized the growing danger of these extremist groups. The Iranian FM highlighted that the region must unite to combat the spread of terrorism before it becomes a greater threat to all neighboring countries. This raises questions about the potential for H.T.S. to expand their influence in the Middle East and the steps that Iraq, Jordan, and Turkey must take to safeguard their security.
